Leadership • Influence • Legacy
[00:00:00] What if the biggest thing standing between you and your next opportunity is not your experience, it's not your education, and it's not your network? What if it's your confidence? Not confidence in what you know, but confidence in who you are. Today we're talking about why self-trust has become one of the most valuable assets in leadership, career growth, and life. Hello and welcome back to Empower and Elevate with Joanna Ogunleye.
[00:00:30] In Episode 1 we talked about positioning. Episode 2 we explored visibility. And in Episode 3 we discussed leading without a title. Today, in Episode 4, we're talking about the foundation underneath all of it. Confidence. Because you can be positioned correctly, you can even be visible, you can even have authority, but if you don't trust yourself, you will hesitate to be able to be visible.
[00:01:00] When opportunities arrive, you will second-guess decisions, you will shrink in rooms where you belong. And that's why confidence matters. Let's explore the following five segments.
[00:01:13] Segment 1. Confidence is not what most people think. Many people think confidence means being loud, being fearless, and having all the answers. But true confidence is none of those things. Confidence is self-trust.
[00:01:33] It is trusting yourself enough to speak, enough to decide, to lead, learn, and also to adapt. Even when certainty doesn't exist, the most confident leaders are not those who know everything. They are those who trust themselves to figure things out. That's what makes you a great leader.
[00:01:58] Let's look at Segment 2. Why so many capable people struggle with confidence. So, this is what I've observed. Many talented professionals underestimate themselves. Meanwhile, less qualified people confidently pursue opportunities. Why is that? Because confidence and competence are not always connected.
[00:02:26] You can be highly capable. You can be highly capable and still question yourself. This often shows up as what we call the imposter syndrome or overthinking, perfectionism, and waiting until you're ready.
[00:02:45] But growth, really, really, really happens when you feel completely ready. Growth is a gradual process. Let's take a look at Segment 3. It's the confidence economy.
[00:03:03] So, we are living in what I call the confidence economy. Today, people are rewarded for being visible or communication, leadership presence, or maybe even initiative. Those who trust themselves often move faster. Not because they're better, but because they are willing to move.
[00:03:31] Confidence creates momentum, and momentum creates opportunity. Moving on to Segment 4. Building self-trust. How do you build self-trust? Confidence is built. And here are four ways to strengthen it. Number one, keep promises to yourself.
[00:03:58] Because every promise kept builds trust. You have to be able to keep promises. Number two, take imperfect action. Confidence grows through action and not waiting. There's no need for you to wait. Stop comparing journeys. That's number three.
[00:04:24] Because comparison weakens confidence, and purpose is the only thing that strengthens it. Number four, remember your evidence. Look back at what you've overcome. You've succeeded before. You can do it again. Don't give up. Moving on to Segment 5. The Mindset Shift. So instead of asking,
[00:04:54] Am I ready? Ask yourself the question, Am I willing? Because readiness is often discovered through action, not before it. So don't ask yourself the question, Am I ready again? Think about it. And ask yourself, Am I willing? Am I willing to take a step? Am I willing to take the chance?
[00:05:20] Am I willing enough to grow beyond where I currently am? Am I willing to trust myself? The people who grow most are not always the most talented. They are often the most willing to trust themselves. Are you willing to trust yourself? And are you willing to grow? Before I close, let's reflect on something. And the question is,
[00:05:49] What would you pursue if you trusted yourself more? Ponder over that question for just a second. And again, what conversation would you start? What opportunity would you pursue? And while you're thinking about the opportunity to pursue, what leadership role would you step into? Be creative. Be honest with yourself.
[00:06:17] Remember, self-trust. Confidence isn't believing you'll never fail. It's believing that you'll be okay even if you do. Trust in yourself. Trust in your ability. Thank you for joining me again on Empower and Elevate. Until next time, keep empowering, keep elevating, keep lifting others up as you rise
[00:06:45] and trust the leader you're becoming. Thank you.
